Obama

So, when did Arron Sorkin start writing for President Obama?

Just watched the tape of tonights speech and wow.

Here's a link if you missed it:
Huffington Post Link to Obama Health Care Speech
Here's a few of my favorite bits:

Well the time for bickering is over. The time for games has passed. Now is the season for action. Now is when we must bring the best ideas of both parties together, and show the American people that we can still do what we were sent here to do. Now is the time to deliver on health care

...

Some of people's concerns have grown out of bogus claims spread by those whose only agenda is to kill reform at any cost. The best example is the claim, made not just by radio and cable talk show hosts, but prominent politicians, that we plan to set up panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill off senior citizens. Such a charge would be laughable if it weren't so cynical and irresponsible. It is a lie, plain and simple.

...

But that's not what the moment calls for. That's not what we came here to do. We did not come to fear the future. We came here to shape it. I still believe we can act even when it's hard. I still believe we can replace acrimony with civility, and gridlock with progress. I still believe we can do great things, and that here and now we will meet history's test.

Election Night Chat

I'm hosting an IRC chat over on Sff.net Tuesday night (irc.sff.net in room #politics).

Come in, talk about what the pundits are saying. Talk about what they're avoiding! Or tell us what your cats are doing.

We don't really care as long as you play nice with those in the room.

http://www.sff.net/people/pff/chatpages/Politics.htm will get you a java client that logs you right into the room if you don't have a normal IRC client.

See you there!

(yes I've recycled this message, come in and yell at me for being lazy!)

BTW new job has started, I'm in Albuquerque NM, so I won't be really early to this chat, I'm thinking around 6-7PM MST for my arrival (depending on how long it takes me to get to where I'll be logging in from.)

ETA Removed "during the debate" :)

Why you should vote

yvonnenavarro writes in http://yvonnenavarro.livejournal.com/59987.html about what women suffragists were subject to during their battles for the right to vote.

"These few paragraphs retell a story about our grandmothers and great-grandmothers. It was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote. The women of which I speak were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote.

And by the end of the night, they were barely alive.

Forty prison guards wielding clubs and with their warden's blessing went on a rampage against 33 women convicted, for lack of a better charge, of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.'"

So many folks talk about how our fathers (and grandfathers and so on) fought and died for our rights, let's not forget that our mothers and grandmothers fought too.

Honor the memories of all our heroes and Vote!

(for the record, I voted a week ago by early ballot)

Presidential Debate tonight

Because I think there's one person on my friends list that missed it :)

I'm hosting an IRC chat over on Sff.net tonight (irc.sff.net in room #politics) during the debate.

Come in, talk about what the candidates are saying. Talk about what they're avoiding! Talk about who's not in the debates (Bob Barr? Cynthia McKinney? Ralph Nader?) Or tell us what your cats are doing.

We don't really care as long as you play nice with those in the room.

http://www.sff.net/people/pff/chatpages/Politics.htm will get you a java client that logs you right into the room if you don't have a normal IRC client.

See you there!

VP debate, word from IRC

Thanks to everyone that showed up, it was a big turnout!

(Especially considering pff and I were there 15 minutes earlier wondering if anyone would show up besides just us!)

We had a good time and will do it again on Tuesday for the next presidential debate!

I'll post the link again on Tuesday!

Thanks and hope to see many of you there again!

IRC chat for VP debate

Some of you might not know but I hang out a lot on Sff.net

Well they have an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) server and this Thursday I'll be hanging out there to discuss the VP debates, live blogging if you will.

Come join me if you've got some time free

http://irc.sff.net will take you to the webclient if you don't have an IRC client installed.

Some chat help can be found at:
http://www.sff.net/help/chat/

(I can't promise we'll be kind to either candidate, a bonehead comment is a bonehead comment from either party and I'll want to call it. But we will do our best to stay civil to the folks live at the chat.)

ETA: Debate starts at 9PM Eastern (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/ and check New York time to your local). I plan on being in the room around 8PM Eastern.
