The car service is picking me up in five and a half hours and I'm finally going to bed. Holy lord. I'll probably have some internet access, so I'll check in with anything juicy. Otherwise I'll see you on the flip side!

Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 06:16 pm the dread second phase
It occurs to me that there's very little advice out there for second phase writers. First phase writers, beginners, get the best attention. But there's a stage in the writing, after you've been a beginner and before you've hit your comfortable, patented stride, that is missing advice.

I am blog-boring these days, mainly because all my brain power is being sucked up by various work commitments. Even my drinking buddies have remarked on how boring and studious I am being. *sobs* Also? It's too damn muggy, despite my promised thunderstorm passing in the night. Hopefully there will be content of interest some point soonish.

And tonight, another massive thunderstorm/monsoon/windstorm of OMG Right Over Us! proportions. I was in my wheee!glory but poor Boomerang Did Not Want. [ooo, we're being told to expect another violent band in about an hour or so. Poor Boomer, gonna be a long night]. Not quite Hello, Dolly, but enough for my needs right now....

[and for those who wonder? This stormbunny would bug out the moment a tropical storm went to Level 2. Bye-bye, you bethcha. Stormbunny, not dumb bunny]

(aside: note to Johnn McCain: when being interviewed on tv in a supermarket? Standing in front of a display of Dole juice cartoons maybe not your best PR move. Just sayin'....)

Because if you don't, you'll miss the York Emporium's SciFri Saturday with author signings, blooper reels (with popcorn!), a visit from NASA, stand-up comedy, an art show and meeeeee!  I'll be one of the authors signing.  I don't think I'll be contributing to the comedy or the bloopers, but you never can tell.  More details can be found here.
I'll also be appearing at DragonCon, August 29 - September 1.  It remains, in Teri's immortal words, my favorite summer camp for wayward adults.  I don't know my final schedule yet, but it looks like I'll be on at least three tracks.
In addition, I'll be signing books with six other authors at the Fort Meade Post Exchange and Borders in Columbia, MD, on Saturday, September 13.  I'll be talking more about these signings later, but at the moment it looks like we'll be at the PX from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and the Borders from 2-4 p.m.  There will be giveaways and prizes, and wild and crazy writers.
Oh wait.  Wild + Crazy = Writers.  Guess it can't be helped.  ;-)
Finally, you may have noticed a new link on my LJ page.  A few weeks ago a friend introduced me to BookTour.com.  It's a great resource for finding author signings and events in your neighborhood.  I'll be using it to keep my calendar until I can get my new web site up and running.
Yeah, I'm behind on that too.  LOL
Cheers!

Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 06:09 pm [travel] Off again

Well, I’m off again at the crack of doom. Heading back to Seattle for tomorrow’s signing with Brenda Cooper at University Books. (Dinner to precede, meet at 5 pm on the corner by the book store, or call me.) I’ll work from the home of the lovely and talented on Friday, then make my way toward the Clarion West party that night before returning home to Nuevo Rancho Lake on Saturday.

Got editorial feedback on “In the Forests of the Night”. Somewhat to my amazement, the feedback was positive and quite minimal. I’ll be a lot tougher on myself in the rewrite, frankly. All good. Meanwhile, Green continues apace. This is a pretty good book, truth be told.

I’m tired as heck, and the antibiotics make my mouth taste like pennies, but otherwise I feel rather myself tonight. As usual, expect continued light blogging through Sunday.

I finally decided post my recent owl purchases and arts/crafts project, but once I gathered picture taking momentum I just couldn't stop myself. The good thing about this is that I now have a better idea of just how much owl stuff I own. On the other hand, you all are the ones I decided to subject it to.

It's not much, but I'm hiding it all behind a cut.

Time to wax narcissistic )

Also, my younger sisters are currently volunteering for a program called Scales 'N Tails in my hometown. They get to gloat to me every day about the owls they help rehabilitate and show off in kids' wildlife education programs. Once they send me pictures, I'll gladly share them here.

Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 06:30 pm Recipe -
1 LG onion
1lb frozen peas
1 can white kidney beans
lime juice
dill
chives
thyme
mint
garlic - 3 cloves
olive oil
salt

blond your onions in a pan.  add garlic.  blond that.  add peas.  stir.  cook until everything's just starting to stick to the pan.  add white beans.

add 1tbs lime juice, plus approximate one teaspoon each dried mint, dill, and thyme.  add 1/2 tbs or more dried chives. stir and cook until flavors are melded and herbs are reconstituted.  (honestly? I sprinkled each in a heavy layer until they sort of covered the surface area of my pan.  It's possible I used way more than a tsp.  I have NO way of knowing!)

Serve over baked potato.  drizzle 1tsp really great olive oil over the potato before adding pea mixture.

Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 05:39 pm Lost object found
My keys were missing.

I was freaking the hell out.

Last time we rekeyed the house, it cost us close to a grand.  Thems a lot of clams to misplace, but I've got enough anxiety issues in my life, and the idea of somebody walking into my house WITH MY KEYS was keeping me up at night.  The alarm is almost always on, but that wasn't making the ghost who kept waking me up at night any quieter.

Thank you for the finding vibes!

I've been selected as a beta tester for World of Warcraft's next much-anticipated "Wrath of the Lich King" expansion.

And for the record, Blizzard's FAQs includes this:
Is the beta protected by a non-disclosure agreement (NDA)?
No, there is no NDA for the beta of Wrath of the Lich King. Feel free to discuss the specifics of the beta with others!

Haven't really had a chance to post for a while.  We took the kids off to Jamaica for a family vacation at Beaches Boscobel, a great family resort I highly recommend.  We'd gone to one of the Sandals resorts in Jamaica for our honeymoon, and had wanted to go back for a long time, but kept putting it off.  With our 15th anniversary on the horizon, we decided it was time.

I won't do a detailed report, but some highlights:

- Christina spending a great deal of time with the arts and crafts director, doing tie-dye, beading t-shirts, and braiding bracelets for her girlfriends back home.  The director loved having there so much that she gave Christina a huge hug and a present when we left.

- Austin and I wandering the property late one night.  We played chess on a giant chess board, played shuffleboard and shot some pool, before wandering to the bar.  It was pretty cool watching my little boy in his Hawaiian shirt hop on a barstool, and order a "Chick Magnet".  A Chick Magnet is apparently a kid's version of a Tequila Sunrise, made with layered strawberry syrup, pineapple juice and Sprite.

- Christina and I taking the shade at the pool bar, sharing a frozen virgin margarita.  As we shared it, another dad and daughter couple swam up to the seats next to us.  Dad asked, "How's things?"  I said, "Pretty good.  It's been a long time since I bought a drink for a pretty lady at a bar."  He goggled at me, and then smiled.  "I never thought about it like that." he said, "Bartender?  We'll have what they're having."

- Austin and I playing in a volleyball tournament, and watching him go from frustrated to serving and returning balls in very short order.

- Amy soaking up the tropical sun and surf, which she loves like no other environment on Earth.

- Me crashing down a straight-drop water slide to land in a very ungraceful and fairly painful manner, to the delight of my family.  Sometimes being asked for an encore is not a good thing.

Since we've been back, we visited with my youngest brother, who was in town on business.  We've attended two Brooklyn Cyclones games, at one of which Austin won a Bionicles doorprize, and Christina got to be the PA announcer for an inning.  We also attended a birthday dinner for our dear family friend, Esther Friesner.

Now I just need to complete work on SFWA's Copyright Education Website, finish the lesson plan for my first full semester teaching the Legal Issues in Publishing course at City College of New York, and finish a short story with a looming deadline.  Once that's done, I can relax from my vacation.
