Hooray!

Albuquerque... the big government thing there is Kirtland Air Force Base, which is where I thought Space Command should have been located. One of the people I knew in college (he was on delay coming on active duty getting a doctorate) got stationed there, after getting so disgusted with "The Zoomies' [Air Force Academy cadets] attitude towards education" he was apparently thinking about resigning his commission at first opportunity (someone else, who for a while was the Air Force expert in computer security, did resign his active duty commission as a consequence of getting disgusted while an instructor at the Air Force Academy, apparently.... and Colorado Springs can;t have improved, that was back BEFORE the likes of Dobson and Haggerty turned the Air Force Academy into an evangelizing fortress...)

There are a bunch of government labs there, or at least, were, that were doing some excellent R&D--but again, that was way back when. Today, who knows.... can't even find anything from the government that's written by actual competent people who are in the government. And as for most contractor-written government specs and standards, the less said, the better. One of the few things I approved of the Carter Administration doing, was promulgating a "plain English" doctrine. That got tossed out. I would like to ban the user of passive voice in most documents....

Welcome to the Land of Enchantment!

My dad was born in Las Cruces, so I spent a lot of time in NM while I was growing up. I was born and lived in Phoenix for 43 years until I got married and moved to NM about 3 years ago. Then April of last year I got a job in and moved to Las Cruces. I would have bet you any amount of money that I would never live in NM and would have doubled it that I would never live in 'Cruces, yet here I am.

If you ever make it down this way, I'd be glad to recommend some very good Mexican food places, also Italian and excellent sushi. Good Thai, but I wouldn't call it excellent. We make it up to The Q every few months, sadly I have no strong restaurant recommendations there (though I have an excellent sushi recommendation in Santa Fe). You might try Yelp.com for that.

Thanks! right now I'm still looking for decent grocery stores!

Albertson is OK, but the local one's a dump

Smiths is better, but the local one ... is missing, I guess they relocated.

Walmart is evil, last resort.

I did find out that there's a sort of region co-op of small grocery stores that have a lot of locally grown foods. There's one a couple blocks from that Albertson's I don't care for.

I've found Popeye's chicken and Pei Wei Asian so I'm good for a while :)

Thanks again, I hope we can catch up - say hi to the Guild for me, I tried to log in last night and the server was 100% full with a 300+ waiting list!
